Two Reasons for Laws

  • Purpose # 1: To restrain the lawless.
    • 1 Timothy 1:8–10 (ESV): 8 Now we know that the law is good, if one uses it lawfully, 9 understanding this, that the law is not laid down for the just but for the lawless and disobedient. . .

  • Purpose # 2: To show that lawfulness begins from the inside out.
    • Romans 7:5 (ESV): 5 For while we were living in the flesh, our sinful passions, aroused by the law, were at work in our members to bear fruit for death.
    • Romans 7:8 8 But sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of covetousness. . . .
    • Hebrews 8:10–11 (ESV): 10  For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws into their minds, and write them on their hearts, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 11  And they shall not teach, each one his neighbor and each one his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest.

  • Laws are limited in their ability to manage human behavior.
    • Romans 1:28–32 (ESV): 28 And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. 29 They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32 Though they know God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.

  • The ability of laws to regulate human behavior is limited. If we over invested in them, we may do more harm than good.
    • Proverbs 16:33 (ESV)33 The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the Lord.

  • Look beyond people’s faults and see their needs.
    • James 2:15–16 (ESV)15 If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that?
    • When we only judge and rebuke people who have had abortions, we often make their situations worse.

  • Myth # 1: Poor people don’t have a purpose.
    • James 2:5 (ESV) 5 Listen, my beloved brothers, has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to those who love him?

  • Children are answers, not problems.

Their end will correspond to their deeds.

We Are God’s Brand Ambassadors

2 Corinthians 5:20 (ESV): 20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.
