These sermons have two goals: My first goal is for you to see God as someone who heals readily and not reluctantly. My second goal is for you to receive healing from God readily and not reluctantly. Big Ideas God’s healing ministry begins in the Old Testament. Jesus is identified as a healer in the Old Testament. The benefit of healing from God is both spiritual and physical. The broader meaning of healing is to restore and make whole. God’s will is to heal (restore and make whole) the entire planet and its inhabitants. God’s will is to heal you. Healing is a matter of when, not if. Jesus already healed you (and now it’s just a matter of when your body expresses the effects of healing) Jesus’ healing of the human body is proof that He can heal everything else. Some of the benefits of the future healed earth can be accessed now. The existence of sickness and disease is the direct result of the sin of Adam. To pursue divine healing is to see sickness as an enemy. The existence of sickness and disease is the work of the devil. Resisting sickness and disease is a form of resisting the devil. To resist the devil is to resist his words and his works. You resist the devil with words The introduction of Jesus to the scene immediately shifts the terms on which God’s people were healed. Ezekiel 16:1–2 (ESV) 1 Again the word of the Lord came to me: 2 “Son of man, make known to Jerusalem her abominations, 3 and say, Thus says the Lord God to Jerusalem: Your origin and your birth are of the land of the Canaanites; your father was an Amorite and your mother a Hittite. Ezekiel 16:4 (ESV) 4 And as for your birth, on the day you were born your cord was not cut, nor were you washed with water to cleanse you, nor rubbed with salt, nor wrapped in swaddling cloths. Ezekiel 16:5 (ESV) 5 No eye pitied you, to do any of these things to you out of compassion for you, but you were cast out on the open field, for you were abhorred, on the day that you were born. 1 Chronicles 21:13 (ESV) – 13 Then David said to Gad, “I am in great distress. Let me fall into the hand of the Lord, for his mercy is very great, but do not let me fall into the hand of man.” Ezekiel 16:6-7 (ESV) 6 “And when I passed by you and saw you wallowing in your blood, I said to you in your blood, ‘Live!’ I said to you in your blood, ‘Live!’ 7 I made you flourish like a plant of the field. And you grew up and became tall and arrived at full adornment. Your breasts were formed, and your hair had grown; yet you were naked and bare. Ezekiel 16:8 (ESV) 8 “When I passed by you again and saw you, behold, you were at the age for love, and I spread the corner of my garment over you and covered your nakedness; I made my vow to you and entered into a covenant with you, declares the Lord God, and you became mine. Ezekiel 16:9 (ESV) 9 Then I bathed you with water and washed off your blood from you and anointed you with oil. Ezekiel 16:10 (ESV) 10 I clothed you also with embroidered cloth and shod you with fine leather. I wrapped you in fine linen and covered you with silk. 11 And I adorned you with ornaments and put bracelets on your wrists and a chain on your neck. 12 And I put a ring on your nose and earrings in your ears and a beautiful crown on your head. 13 Thus you were adorned with gold and silver, and your clothing was of fine linen and silk and embroidered cloth. You ate fine flour and honey and oil. You grew exceedingly beautiful and advanced to royalty. Deuteronomy 28:1–2 (ESV): 1 “And if you faithfully obey the voice of the Lord your God, being careful to do all his commandments that I command you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth. 2 And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, if you obey the voice of the Lord your God. Deuteronomy 7:15 (ESV) – 15 And the Lord will take away from you all sickness, and none of the evil diseases of Egypt, which you knew, will he inflict on you, but he will lay them on all who hate you. Ezekiel 16:15 (ESV) 15 “But you trusted in your beauty and played the whore because of your renown and lavished your whorings on any passerby; your beauty became his. Ezekiel 16:27 (ESV): 27 Behold, therefore, I stretched out my hand against you and diminished your allotted portion and delivered you to the greed of your enemies. . . Deuteronomy 28:15 (ESV): 15 “But if you will not obey the voice of the Lord your God or be careful to do all his commandments and his statutes that I command you today, then all these curses shall come upon you and overtake you. Deuteronomy 28:21–22 (ESV): 21 The Lord will make the pestilence stick to you until he has consumed you off the land that you are entering to take possession of it. 22 The Lord will strike you with wasting disease and with fever, inflammation and fiery heat, and with drought and with blight and with mildew. They shall pursue you until you perish. Deuteronomy 28:27–29 (ESV): 27 The Lord will strike you with the boils of Egypt, and with tumors and scabs and itch, of which you cannot be healed. 28 The Lord will strike you with madness and blindness and confusion of mind, 29 and you shall grope at noonday, as the blind grope in darkness, and you shall not prosper in your ways. And you shall be only oppressed and robbed continually, and there shall be no one to help you. Deuteronomy 28:35 (ESV): 35 The Lord will strike you on the knees and on the legs with grievous boils of which you cannot be healed, from the sole of your foot to the crown of your head. Ezekiel 16:30 (ESV): 30 “How sick is your heart, declares the Lord God, because you did all these things, the deeds of a brazen prostitute, Hebrews 10:1–4 (ESV) 1 For since the law has but a shadow of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near. 2 Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, since the worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have any consciousness of sins? 3 But in these sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year. 4 For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. Hebrews 10:11–14 (ESV) 11 And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12 But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, 13 waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. 14 For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.
