These sermons have two goals: My first goal is for you to see God as someone who heals readily and not reluctantly. My second goal is for you to receive healing from God readily and not reluctantly. Divine Healing is No Longer Based on Merit The healings of Jesus are not based on merit Divine healing in Christ is a matter of faith, not works. The Healings of Jesus Are an Explicit Form of Spiritual Warfare The Case of Mistaken Identity “Have You Considered My Servant Job?” Job 1:6–12 (ESV) – 6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them. 7 The Lord said to Satan, “From where have you come?” Satan answered the Lord and said, “From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking up and down on it.” 8 And the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away from evil?” 9 Then Satan answered the Lord and said, “Does Job fear God for no reason? 10 Have you not put a hedge around him and his house and all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. 11 But stretch out your hand and touch all that he has, and he will curse you to your face.” 12 And the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your hand. Only against him do not stretch out your hand.” So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord. Reasons Why Job is not Model for How We Interact with the Devil Today The New Testament guidance for addressing the devil does not resemble what happens in Job at all. Job likely lived in a time before God established formal protections for His people or revealed Himself to them in writing. The book of Job is not about figuring out why suffering exists, but about learning to endure in faith when we suffer. The legal means to challenge the devil did not yet exist. Legalities Just like the human world is governed by law, God’s world is governed by law. Human law is derived from divine law [Romans 13:1 (ESV): 1 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.] Law is the medium by which things that are wrong are made right. The Devil is a Squatter [Genesis 3:15 (ESV) – 15 I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”] We Are Accessories (and Causalities) in a Conflict Between Jesus and Satan The relationship between Jesus and the devil is antagonistic. It’s not collaborative. It’s not cooperative. Revelation 1:1 (ESV): 1 The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show to his servants the things that must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John Revelation 12:7–11 (ESV): 7 Now war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon. And the dragon and his angels fought back, 8 but he was defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. 9 And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. 10 And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God. 11 And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death. Jesus Came to the Earth to Destroy the Works of the Devil 1 John 3:8 (ESV): 8 Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. Acts 10:34–38 (ESV): 34 So Peter opened his mouth and said: “Truly I understand that God shows no partiality, 35 but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. 36 As for the word that he sent to Israel, preaching good news of peace through Jesus Christ (he is Lord of all), 37 you yourselves know what happened throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism that John proclaimed: 38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.
